Doug,
I have the same problem with my Nissan and my Mazda pick ups. Nissan says they
don't have a fuel pump filter to fix it and Mazda can't believe the problem is
the fuel pump. Ford (who makes the brother to the Mazda- Ranger) does have a
filter that goes inside the tank and is supposed to help greatly. The Ford
filter costs $89 and takes about 1-1/2 hrs to install since they have to drop
the tank.
It doesn't sound like the price you are being quoted is to far out of line with
other places. I haven't been able to get the Ford filter installed in my
Mazda. Ford dealer won't touch it and Mazda says they won't install a
non-Mazda part....Catch 22. I'll have to do it myself if I want to get rid of
the noise.
Good luck on yours. Your may get some good responses on this problem. I'll be
following the thread to see how it goes.
