just be thankful that you are not heavily into sw/mw bc dx.  my ic-r71
shares much of the rx circuitry with the ic-751 and every jump between am,
lsb, usb & cw entails a frequency adjustment. a monumental pain in the butt

i do have on file a mod for the ic-r71 which successfully tackled the
problem from a hardware perspective rather than software, but the mod
requires extensive hacking and was difficult to justify 20 years ago when
the set was current technology - nowadays the time and effort would
certainly not be warranted - easier to purchase a current set without such a
problem. i can't remember the name of the author, it was submitted to me by
a melbourne based dxer, when i was editing the dx australia club magazine.
we chose not to publish because of the complexity of the mod and as far as i
am aware the mod was only executed that once. this is not to say that a
simple and elegant solution does not exist, i have not fully explored that
side of the ic-r71 schematic yet and the r71 still is a participant in my
pool of dx rxs.
