Chris,
Not necessarily. The audio-frequency response curve for optimum articulation
(intelligibility) at the receiver is typically 350 to 2700 Hz at the -6 dB
points, with a 2 dB peak at about 1800 Hz. Assuming that the receiver audio
response falls within this curve, a high-quality speaker will in all
probability sound more pleasant than the little internal speaker of the
radio, but its capabilities will be wasted to some degree.
If the low-frequency response of the radio extends down to 70 to 100 Hz, the
low-frequency components will detract from articulation in some situations.
If this occurs, the radio's IF filters and/or PBT can be adjusted to cut the
low end.
Probably the best choice of speaker is one designed to match the
audio--frequency response of the receiver. I have had an Icom SP-20 for many
years, and it does a pretty good job in this regard.
Best 73,

I would certainly hazard a guess that a hifi speaker would enhance a ham
or communication radio audio.
