Hi Tony. Sorry if I got on your case about this, I'm just trying to save
you some serious grief for being a honest person. If you ask the Police to
run the serial number and it's stolen they have little choice but to to
act on what they see, you will lose the equipment and likely be charged
with possession of stolen property. At work today I asked a criminal
lawyer and the Police, they agreed on both points. Now you and an
expensive lawyer must prove you didn't steal it. Most likely it's totally
legit, but there has to be a more discrete (safer) way to find out. QST
magazine used to publish stolen equipment and serial numbers, haven't seen
that in decades. Maybe someone knows where to look, good luck and best
