If we're talking about Single Side Band transmissions, it doesn't make
much difference how the Mark and Space frequencies are generated, except
that the dial setting for the actual center frequency between the mark and
space has to be considered. One of my old-time favorite methods from the
40's was to direct frequency shift a 200 KHz oscillator, and mix that with
some crystal oscillator in the transmitter. Later, the O-5/FR oscillator
put it all in one box. What's happening is that we're exclusive ORing a
pair of radio frequencies spaced 170(?) Hz apart. Sometimes nomenclatures
are determined by patent laws...
