After receiving my new Pro II, I also questioned this reading on the power
output.
I dragged the test equipment home and started checking. With using the Bird
4391 Power/Swr meter,
and the IFR 2900 Service monitor. The actual output power with two tone
insertion is 100 watts.
This is dead accurate. There is a potentiometer located in the 756 to
increase the power. I found that the
PA output can be raised to 110 watts with no extra distortion. As soon as
you get to 125 watts, the change in distortion becomes significant. The
radios PA is capable of 150 near max on the trimmer. Do not ever go there.
Unless you want to replace the PA, and sound like the cbers on ch 19. YUK. I
can contest to the cleanliness at the output signal if kept reasonable. We
all need to disregard the meter, I know it's hard, but try.
