Actually, the terminology is a little slippery here.

On the transmission line there is energy being conveyed
toward the antenna
via a FORWARD traveling wave.

Similarly, due to the reflection process, there is energy
being conveyed
away from the antenna via a REFLECTED traveling wave.

The NET POWER being delivered to the antenna and being
radiated, less
antenna heat losses, is simply the difference between the
Forward and
Reflected power values.

The Bird is reading either the FORWARD power or the
REFLECTED power.
Subtract those two readings to get the NET POWER delivered
to the antenna
to be radiated.

Don't you just hate these nit pickers!   <:}
