I noticed in one of the ILRP linked sites that they are selling a dtmf
keypad similar to the ones used on old telephones.  They are in a tiny abs
plastic box, and ran from a small watch type button cell.

I'm sure Ive seen kits for them too. Try hitting DTMF kits or something like
that in Google search etc. Should turn up something. Maybe "Ramsey" kits.
