[Icom] Icom swr foldback question

I have a question reguarding SWR foldback with my Icom 746.
At a 1.5:1 SWR, it cuts back to 50 watts. At a 2:1, I'm down 
to 20 watts. In contrast, I have a Kenwood 940 that puts out
80 watts at a 3:1 SWR. When doing seach and pounce contesting,
this can be a real pain. The only solution I've come up with is
to use my external tuner, as the bandwidth I can still operate
at is much greater then with the internal tuner. Is there something
wrong with my 746, or do most operate this way?
