[Icom] Amateur Radio, Audio, and RF levels

Not true.

Several of the fellows on 14,178 are running Heathkit SB-200 amplifiers. It
is EASY to have an S9+20 signal with modest equipment. When conditions are
right, S9+20 is a regular occurrence with 600 watts, 3 element tribander at
50 feet on a normal city lot. Yes it is true, a STRONG signal makes it
easier to get a good recording of the other fellows audio when there is no
noise on the receiving end when the recording is made.

Get a calculator out and start figuring power required to achieve a 20 dB
increase in signal level.
It's pretty evident what kind of power level would be needed to increase a
signal from S9+10 dB to S9+20 dB. Assuming that the fellow was running 1500
watts. (Or even 500 watts).

You must admit, the audio that "they" produce on 178 is quite pleasant to
listen to ! In fact, I rather enjoy listening to them. They are very
skilled in what they do, and most if not all are professionals in the
broadcast field.

Take a look at there web sites and you will see!

REMEMBER, high quality SSB audio is nothing more that a "facet" of the
hobby. Just like folks that:

Work DX
Like to build amplifiers
Rag chew on SSB
Rag chew on CW
Participate in contests (all modes)
Repair broken radios and sell them, and buy more to repair
Have several VHF and/or UHF repeaters.
Run HF mobile
Communicate on internet mailing lists about Icom radios

The list runs on and on.....

Don't criticize others because your not "into" what it is they do!! It
makes YOU look bad!

What's your niche in Amateur Radio ?? Is it listed above ??

73 and ENJOY! the hobby.
