This is a very common problem with different ICOM models.
I have had this problem myself.
The problem is to be found in four adjustable potentiometers
inside the rig. I am not a technical guy but after a phonecall
to my ICOM-man I was able to temporary solve the problem.
The components are below the powersupply and when I found them I just pushed
on the components with a toothpick. However, the problem occured again
and to solve it permanently you need to replace these components.
For me it is impossible but for a handy man it is not.

I send my IC-765 to teh dealer and he replaced what was needed.
I think you can use your ICON-761 for a long time more.
By the way I also have the 2KL and the AT-500, but have some trouble 
with the AT at the moment. Will send both units to my dealer who will 
check it out for me.
