Get a copy of the service manual and compare the diode matrix on the main CPU
between the US version and the Asian version. Simply reconfigure the diode
matrix to match that of the Asian version, that is if the Asian version's
frequency ranges meet the type-acceptance requirements of your country. Most
of the Icom radios, as well as Yaesu and Kenwood, all use the same CPU for
the various versions of a given model. The diode matrix simply tells the CPU
which instruction set (ie:freq ranges) to use.
If you do not have access to the service manual, Icom may send you the page
IF you get ahold of the right person who is willing to do it.
I had to do a similar thing about 10 years ago with an Icom IC901. My
beautiful state of NJ had a crazy scanner law on the books which basically
made any newer dual band radio with extended receive coverage illegal in an
automobile in NJ, unless you were a police, fire, or medic officer. Due to
some bozo jamming the local police frequency (later caught), my vehicle was
suspected (wonder why with all the antennas on it!!!!). A search warrant was
issued to impound my car and I was arrested and had my radio gear
confiscated. Went to court and had the case thrown out ( 18 months and $$$$
later) with the help of some well-known hams, and helped get the law changed
in this state. Meanwhile, between court dates and before the jammer was
caught, I was pulled over numerous times, and the police dept's so-called
communications engineer was baffled as to why my replacement radio (same
model)had less frequency capabilities. Had to see their faces when they
thought they had me a second time and were disappointed to see a radio with
only ham-band coverage! This same engineer couldn't comprehend the basic
direction-finding techniques either! When I offered to assist, they were even
more unfriendly since they did not want their problems (jamming) exposed.
Gotta love politics!
Good Luck,
Eric
