I cannot but help but respond to your comment. I promise you, it not only
can happen, but does happen. It happened to me also about two years ago. I
had long discussions with the electrical engineering experts for several
firms who made good on my $10,000 worth of losses. I had to draw out my
entire connections for all equipment affected or not. I was in the room when
the stroke hit, and knew I was still alive when I realized I could smell the
smoke! Got quite and education from discussing with the various engineers
employed by the insurance and other firms. All agreed on one thing though,
if a strong enough stroke strikes close enough, it will not matter that feed
lines, electrical power lines and even the ground are
connected/disconnected. The electromagnetic impulse will absolutely induce
itself on all wiring within its reach and thereby do its damage. So, your
radio could be just sitting on the desk top as was several of mine, and that
induced current will find a ground even if it has to jump through the air
which mine did and through the wall too, if necessary. Later determined
that the stroke hit about 75 feet away, literally blowing apart the vertical
antenna sitting at the top of my tower. Most hams cannot afford a grounding
system adequate to protect against this type occurrence. Even then, there
would be no gurantee, but the better the ground system the more likely ones
equipment will survive the event. It made a believer out of me!! Bill, K3YC
