Yes it can !!! Lightning has up to 100,000 Amperes in the first strike
[90th percentile strike USA]. It rises in less than 1 microsecond. That
produces a transient magnetic field of 100,000,000,000 amperes per
second.  That is a H U G E magnetic field.

Any small inductive loop, even toroids, will react to that level of
field. A 0.1 microhenry loop in that field can have 10,000 volts induced
in it!! [e = -L[di/dt]]

So, a nearby lightning strike is FATAL to semiconductor equipment, even
unplugged, from the magnetic field not the conduction currents!! 

Note: The article[s] in QST ignored the magnetic component of lightning.
