Hi Marty,
It is recommended that you use an auxiliary keying relay - just to be sure.
If you wish, you can measure the open-circuit voltage, and the
closed-circuit current, between the AL-1200 keying line and chassis. If the
readings are 12V and 100mA respectively, you may be OK without the relay -
but if the amplifier develops any inductive spike across the line, that
could damage the reed relay in the exciter. So just to be safe, you will be
better off with the auxiliary relay.
Ameritron makes a relay buffer (ARB-704)

Subject: [Icom] switching voltage
Hello all,
I just received an Ameritron Al1200 which has a keying v of 12v @ 100ma....
I have a new Icom 756 PRO II. Do I need an external relay for the Icom ?
Has anyone had experience with the Al1200 and an Icom 756 Pro or Pro II
over a period of time ? Thanks for the response and 73, g.b.
Kindest regards,
Marty, W3QK
