If you use a non ICOM mic, make sure you put a blocking capacitor in series
with pin 1. I think you can still get 8 pin mic connectors in Radio Shack. A
plain Shure 444 has too high of an impedance and maybe not enough gain for
any ICOM Radio. You might get away with 444D which is low impedance but
still gain might be too low. I would advise using an ICOM mic or a Heil.

I assume from what I've read here that a Shure 444 can be used with the 746.
If so, where can I pick a mike  connector for the rig at a reasonable cost?
