You answered your own question, Terry.  A lot of people don't join the list 
until they buy a new radio or have a problem with it.  Granted they could 
search the archives, but, unfortunately, the archives aren't that easy or 
intuitive to search, so they make the assumption they can ask here.

That is one of the reasons we are working on a FAQ site 
http://www.qsl.net/icom/ so we will eventually be able to put all of these 
common questions and answers in an easy-to-find location.  So if anyone has 
a very complete and concise answer to this question, please find and submit 
it to the FAQ Webmaster at icom@qsl.net.  This goes for any other 
frequently asked questions, too.
