[Icom] external speaker for IC 746

Earlier today, I asked if anyone knew if the speaker connection on the rear
of the 746 was mono or stereo. The unanimous consensus was that it is mono.
I hooked it up using a mono jack, and ran it through a Timewave DSP 9+ to a
Drake MS4 speaker. The signal began cutting out on loud signals, and at
times, sounded very tinny. I have 2 of these and tried both, with no change
in the problem. I then took the DSP 9+ out of the circuit and ran the cable
directly to the MS4, with the same results. Unplugging everything from the
rear speaker plug and using the internal speaker results in normal sounding
signals.
The purpose of the Timewave was to give me an outboard method of controlling
the speaker as well as the audio enhancement feature of the unit. I need the
external speaker due to the need to place some things on top of the 746
cabinet.
Has anyone else had such an experience and / or any ideas on what's going
on? Could this be in the rear speaker plug?????
Thanks in advance
Tom
