Thanks for asking me, Jimmy, but I fear that I know very little about
the older 746. I *suspect* from your description that the "narrow
filter option" comprises an audio filter with three preset bandwidths.
It could be implemented by DSP or analog opamp circuitry - I just
don't know.

I have a hunch that by the time you read this, you will have received
a dozen correct answers to your questions, but since you addressed
your enquiry to me, I felt required to make some sort of response.

One thing that I do know is that the new 746PRO is a much more capable
radio than your 746, and that if you could swing a trade up to one,
you would really like its performance.
