Mack:
I, too, am experiencing this low mic gain symptom with my 706mkII.
Icom Americas site indicates a Field Modification for the ORIGINAL 706
(NOT the mkII) that involves changing out a surface mount resistor (R256,
27K) in the speech amp to a higher value (>68K). The same schematic number
and part value exists in the mkII speech amp, but I have not tried this in
my mkII as of yet. If you try this modification, please post your results
to this reflector, and I will do the same.

Maybe someone could help me with this one. I went back several months
and couldn't find anyone who had this problem.

When I am talking on the 707MKII, I usually use a desk mic, the SM 8.
It is a hot mic, and even when set at the low setting (underneath the
mic base) and a mic gain of 4, it is more than enough.

However, when I use the stock mic, I have very weak audio, even with the
gain turned all the way up, both on 2 meters and HF. I thought this was
a problem with the mic itself until I purchased a DTMF mic (118T)
yesterday and got the same results. I could even tell the difference
myself when using the echo test on a local repeater. Very noticable.

Is there an internal pot somewhere that adjusts the level of the
microphone? I have haard others with the 706 MKII using a stock mic and
they sound just fine.

Thanks for the help.

Mack

Hi Mack,

Insufficient mic gain of the stock hand mic HM103 is a typical problem for
IC706 series. Please read icomamerica support page for Ic706. If you do
not know the exact web link, please visit icom FAQ web page www.qsl.net/icom
or the icom section of www.mods.dk

If all the solutions given in the above web pages do not solve your problem,
you may consider getting the One Big Punch speech compressor from
www.w4rt.com

If you still have problems, please email me direct because this matter was
discussed in the past and I do not want to occupy the band width here.

Happy Holidays!!
