Gareth
If it were mine, I'd place a call to Scott Malcom just over the US/Canadian
border. He specializes in out of warranty ICOM gear. Not sure what he'd
say but I called him on the phone and dialogued with him about possible
causes of a problem I was having with my 751A. Decided he knew his stuff so
sent him the rig. Got it back in about 3 weeks (I told him to take his time
as I was going on vacation) and it seems to work just fine again.

Gareth,

Sorry to depress you even further - but you may wish to check this page:

Whether the IC-701 is repairable, or worth the effort of a repair attempt,
depends on what is wrong with it. If the bandswitch Ledex (stepping
solenoid) has failed, you're on your own - unless you can locate a "hangar
queen" with a good Ledex. If you feel you can repair the radio yourself,
you've nothing to lose by having a go at it. I would certainly advise
against shipping it off to a repair centre.

I only hope you did not pay too much for the beast. What's too much?
Probably anything over $100.

Good morning,

The more I read about this rig, the more I have a feeling I should have read
more before buying one!! Has anyone repaired one or had one repaired for
them lately? I have a feeling this radio, even though it is in mint
condition but not working, is going to end up a lost cause.

Is the 701 an orphan? Is it worth fixing? Can it be fixed? Opinions?
