Rolly, yes, this whole idea does seem counter-intutive. However, I think it
can best be explained thus.....
I recently had (what I thought) was a spark problem on the Cobra I just
finished. After doing some research, and discussing the subject with some
carburator and ignition companies, it became clear. If you provide enough of
a spark kernal to light the fuel/air mixture, more spark will be just wasted.
But what is enough? This is confusing also. Todays cars are very percisely
metered using fuel injection. Also, since unleaded gas is used, plug fouling
isn't really a problem. This was further revealed by many recent (reliable)
magazine 'shoot out' type reviews of aftermarket ignition systems. They
tested several on a 'dyno mule'. This is an engine in good shape that can
produce a known level of horsepower/torque, pull after pull. The magazine
made several pulls with each brand of ignition. The results were an
insignificant difference between pulls. However, if you had an older vehicle
that was marginal, the results could have been much different.
Jacobs uses some "enthustiac" wording in their ads. From all the real world
reports I have heard, the $ of thier stuff is much too high to justify. Now,
I didn't say it was inferior, the cost/benefit ratio is just not good.
Lastly, the wire manufacturers have developed the new wires using some
inductance/capacitive effects in the wire "spiral low resistance" elements.
This allows them to fire the plug easily, but still dampen the pulse across
the RF spectrum. Even on the drag car I had, it ran better with the spiral
wires. I had to 'see' for myself, but they work.
I might add the name "Accel" to the list.
