Hello Gareth:

I bought an IC 701 new when it first was introduced.  It continues to work 
well although I had problems with the original power supply.  Icom eventually 
replaced it with a switcher that has been trouble free. 

The IC 701 has separate JFET RF amplifiers for each band to achieve optimum 
performance.  This may help your troubleshooting.  

If it is in good condition, and you can't find its problems, ICOM in 
Bellevue, WA will service it.
