I have had the IC 718 for about two months now, and continue to be amazed at how well it performs for a "low end" radio. Choosing between it and the Yaesu FT 840 was a complete no-brainer. My 718 came with the optional DSP, and I have added an Inrad 400 Hz CW filter, which is spectacular. Still, it astounds me that the designer(s) of this fine little rig saw fit to leave it without an AGC control. My work-around for this is the old-timer's trick of using a relatively high audio gain setting, and then using the RF gain as a volume control. Of course, that renders the S-meter useless, but we all know that they are useless anyway. Still, a functional AGC control would be a very desirable addition to this wonderful little radio. What are the chances that someone will come up with solution to this problem someday?
