From cboone at earthlink.net Mon Nov 24 05:15:04 2014 From: cboone at earthlink.net (Chris Boone) Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2014 04:15:04 -0600 (GMT-06:00) Subject: [HoustonHam] OT: Winows XP update issue Message-ID: <15624826.1416824105052.JavaMail.root@wamui-june.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Apologies for any duplicates you may see of this msg (any replies, PLEASE send direct and not through any mail list): Since a lot you MAY still run XP (HOPEFULLY SP3!), thought you might find this interesting and pass it along....This does not affect Win7 or later but I understand it does affect Server 2000 and 2003 and ANY XP version...have not seen anything on Server 2008 being affected (yet!) I recently reloaded XP SP3 (from a slipstreamed CD I made and have used several times on reloads and fixes) on a HD recently....(clean reinstall...wiped drive)..After Automatic Updates downloaded and installed 240+ updates, I found I could not go MANUALLY to Windows Update....the page would display an error code and would not show any updates....though I KNEW there were still plenty left.. BEEN trying every fix I could find.......FINALLY found out the simple (isn't it always???) FACT, and the fix along with it :) MICROSOFT let the Certificate for the (THEIR OWN) page expire on November 17th!!! SOOOO to get around the "problem" (Intentional????? HMMM especially since one group has claimed XP updates will be available through 2019 now IF you know how to get them!!!), simply turn OFF Windows Time Sync Update in the PC clock, then set the date to November 16 or earlier....and VIOLA!! you can see what updates you are missing!!! AFTER you get all updates downloaded and installed, reset clock and turn Internet time sync back on...AUTO Update will run in the background and download any NEW updates..I did this trick at 9PM....by TEN, I had MANUALLY downloaded 32+ updates including .Net Framework 4!! which had PLENTY of security upgrades!! DUH????.....installed and reset clock and all is happy again..... IF you have to reload XP on a HD, keep this in mind.....it will save your hours of grief and Googling!!! NOW anyone have a Win7 HOME Premium COA they want to sell cheap or a VOL EN they wish to "loan" LOL ??? I have the DVD, lost the COA with the code key over the last 2 years since I bought it!!! (I sure can pick em, cant I??) Otherwise, I would not HAVE reloaded XP but put Win7 on the drive!! M$ strikes again!!!! Pass it on..............
