If the oscillators were built as originally designed, this wouldn't happen.
The grid tank circuit is never tuned to the crystal frequency but rather
approximately halfway between the fundamental and first harmonic.  This is
used to control crystal current, not to resonate with the crystal.  The
plate tank tuned to the desired harmonic but never the fundamental.  The
"crystal crackers" that I've read about all violate these simple rules.
