Hi Ray,
   The metal tab is usually if not always connected to the  center pin 
regardless of pin function. You can check with an ohmmeter. The only  isolated 
ones are covered in a coating. Otherwise you need an insulating/heat  
dissipation kit or an isolated heat sink.

In  scanning thru the 40 pages of specs on the LM317T, I am unable to  
discern
if the mounting tab is isolated from the terminals.  In other  words, can

tab be bolted directly to the chassis for heat sinking,  without shorting

one of the terminals?

Anyone know one way or  the other?
