i dip them in a weak mix of muriatic acid for a SHORT time , then rinse  .
works very well on car hardware  and hot tub filters also. (not  joking)
if you are chicken try straight vinegar for a few minutes, then rinse. 
also regular carburetor cleaner at your local serious auto repair works in  
about 10 minutes.  they look new and these methods do not attack the oil /  
grease in bearings . so you need to rinse with other solvents  (brake kleen 
 etc )and relube.
