Dennis and all,
         I have been able to drill a very small hole in the top of the 
meter and superglue in a white LED with very good success.  Also if it is 
just a clear meter, just put the LED on top of the meter and cover with 
aluminum foil to reflect the light. Adjust the current to just the minimum 
that you need to light the meter using various resistors, since the white 
ones are very bright.  I've used red and green LEDs too.
