I don't know how they were wired into the circuit.  The power supply had some indication it was from a fire control console.  The supply was semi-stripped when I got it and I just finished the job.

I hadn't thought of a temperature device.  It's not a thermistor, no resistance but maybe a mechanical thermoswitch?  I'll hit one tomorrow with the heat gun.

Spike supressor?  Maybe, it might have been a 28 volt, high amperage supply, and I got no current flow with up to 140 volts across the device.
