Many thanks to all who responded to my question about mobile and shack
grounding.
I really appreciate the time that you all took with your logical and well
reasoned answers.
Considering corrosion, flexibility, skin effect, surface area and noise
generation potential,
here is my action plan so far:
1) I have removed any braid that is exposed to the outside world on the
mobile.
This has been replaced with 3/4 inch spraypainted copper strap. For example,
where
the copper strap exits the trunk space to the trunk lip, through the
weather-stripping,
for a trunk lip HF antenna mount.
2) I have, for the time being, retained the 1 inch braid INSIDE the
vehicle, such as between my seat bolt and the radio chassis, and inside
the trunk between the chassis and the inside trunk lid. This is to have
flexibility. I will replace this with copper strap if any signs of corrosion
/ noise / antenna instability develops.
3) in the shack I will replace all copper braid with ' flexible' /
perforated 1/2 inch copper pipe strapping
between all ground lugs, to the common ground connection of an 8 foot copper
rod already sunk in the basement floor,
3 feet from my operating position.
Again, thanks so much for the well reasoned responses,
I'll let you know how it goes...
