Thank you to James and Ian for so far responding to my question.
And thank you for the generous offer to help me out with an encoder.

Direction is very important for the encoder, (is the frequency going up or 
down)?
So quadrature is a likely bet.
I have a friend in town who just told me he has a mechanical encoder 
"somewhere"
in his junk box, so maybe by the weekend I can experiment and get back to 
the group.
