Barry,

 

It looks like the limiting is done after the 455-kHz ceramic filter.  You should be able to receive AM by patching the input or output of the 455-kHz filter into an AM IF amplifier such as one from a broadcast receiver.  I'm not getting a perspective on the size of the box.  Possibly you could mount the PCB from a small AM receiver inside the AR-2n6k box with a switch to select demodulation mode.

 

I'm guessing you'll also want a broadband VHF preamplifier between the antenna and the receiver.  But check out the receiver without the preamp first.
