Hi Jeff:
You're basically on the right track with the rx resto. Continue to replace any possible leaky caps and check the usual suspects (bad resistors, etc) esp. if they are out of spec by more than 20% (if unmarked) or whatever the tolerance level is shown on the resistor bands. Hopefully, no corrosion has found it's way to the radio. Otherwise, you may have ground path problems there too.
Having said that, a normal alignment procedure according to the tech manual would be in order. Oh, I forgot, check them tubes first!
Finally, tell your sons "Semper Fi" from a tanker.
