You both might also be interested in Bill Carver's April 1996 QST
article titled "A High-Performance AGC/IF Subsystem."

Bill (W7AAZ) uses a pair of Analog Devices AD600 modules and some
auxiliary circuitry to produce a truly remarkable IF subsystem with 130 dB
range, 0.03 uV Minimum Discernible Signal (2.5 kHZ BW), excellent
strong signal capability with an input intercept at +20 dBm, two AGC
detectors for excellent transient response, user selectable AGC hang-time
via a pot, and a linear in dB S-meter.

This IF subsystem is currently in use by several homebrewers interested
in high performance receivers.
