I believe the term is 'Real World Interfacing' and it's
done MANY places... Just one locally is a private store-
n-lock place that has their card reader/number pad and the
access gate interfaced via a PC using A/D and D/A controller
cards. Take a look at the Digi-Key web site or in one of
their later hardcopy catalogs and you should find ISA cards
(and serial/parallal external boxes) in there that have 8 to 10
small relays on them, that could of course be used to control
LARGER relays for heavier loads.
I came about 'this' close to taking on the job of building
and integrating the system for them, but didn't have a lot
of contacts (didn't even know about Digi-Key) at the time,
and had just become 'wheel-less' (no car), so I passed on it.
Would have probably been a neat project, but I just didn't
have the resources or the time, then.
