Simply turn the meter upside down and reverse the leads (if necessary).
This was a pretty common way to do it in the old days.

All:

Been having problems with trying to figure out how to adapt a 
conventional "forward reading" meter (i.e. the needle is on the left side of
the 
meter wwith zero signal and/or the radio off and rises with more signal 
toward the right) in a National NC-57B circuit where when the radio is off, 
the S-meter rests totally on the right, then when turned on, the needle 
rests at 0 on the left and then operates as a conventional meter. Does 
anyone have a fix? I'm using an old backlit RME meter that reads 
normally (i.e. zero/radio off-meter rests on the left and with signal and 
radio on, meter deflects to the right). Let me know before I go bald 
pulling all my hairs out!!!!

Just a wild guess, (disclaimer: I have no idea or
experience on this type of meter:)

Try measuring the direction, magnitude of current when
meter is at rest on left side after radio is ON, with
no signal. This should give you the 'bias' current
direction / value which you have to cancel out when
you have to incoporate a regular meter. Once you do
that, you could use your regular meter, but probably
need to reverse the leads if the existing meter had
dcreasing current for increasing signal (S). 

Maybe you could cancel out this bias(it maybe called
something else)current using a preset potential
divider on the coresponding lead of the replaced meter
to get appropriate potential to nullify it at '0' S.
