This report covers Mid Nov to Mid Dec 2010
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
ARES and the EMCOMM community will be preparing for the "Asia Pacific
Economic Cooperation" aka APEC meeting in late 2011. President Barack
Obama's selection of Honolulu as the site for the annual APEC Leaders
meeting means Honolulu will be in the world spotlight. The Hawai'i
meetings, scheduled for November 12-20, 2011 at the Hawai'i Convention
Center, are expected to draw more than 10,000 people to Honolulu, a welcome
boost for the state's struggling tourism industry. It will also mean
security and communications will be top priority. Several early 2011
planning meetings are already scheduled in preparation for the event.
In addition, the Makani Pahili 2011 exercise in late May or early June and
the October Simulated Emergency Test (SET) are already in the planning
stages. It will be a very busy year. Volunteer Organizations such as ARES,
VOAD, CERT, RACES and others will be called upon however training and
equipment upgrades will become very important. If you haven't completed the
basic ARES and ICS courses, now is the time to take them. They will become
very important.
Kevin Bogan, AH6QO and Bart Aranoff, WH6AA will be teaching and/or
coordinating a series of Technician Class License Preparation classes in
January for the HAH. Kevin just completed two years as Vice Chair of HSVOAD
and will continue as Chair of the Communications Committee. He plans to
also teach License classes for Catholic Charities and other members of VOAD.
(Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters)
Skywarn Recognition Day (SRD), December 4, 2010 (Zulu) was a success with
approximately ninety check-in's on VHF/UHF (including IRLP) and
approximately thirty more on HF, seventeen NWS stations were contacted.
This year was a challenge since there is no Skywarn Coordinator; however, an
ad hoc Skywarn Steering Committee comprised of Jack, KH6DQ; Clem, KH7HO;
Bart, WH6AA; Ron, AH6RH and Kevin, AH6QO were able to plan, coordinate and
staff the 24 hour event. Ray Tanabe, WH7IH, said thanks all of the
volunteers who staffed the amateur radio station at the National Weather
Service in Honolulu and to the operators who contacted the station for the
special event. Additional thanks go to the committee for installing the
newly purchased radios and antennas at the NWS station.
Skywarn was activated for real just one week after the practice operation.
We are now officially out of Hurricane season however maverick storms are
always possible as this report shows. December 8, 9 &10 had a winter storm
come through the State of Hawaii from the north and drop a lot of rain and
even snow on the high mountains. As this is being written we are again in a
flash flood watch with a storm approaching from the South West. Earlier,
parts of the state were in a flash flood Warning with heavy rain and
flooding. In addition there is a rare winter tropical storm named Omeka a
little over 1000 miles to the west of the state. This is only the second
winter tropical storm the weather service has ever recorded in Hawaii.
For other information about the Pacific section check the ARRL Pacific
Section website. http://www.arrl.org/Groups/view/pacific-section. Your SM
is looking for volunteer for various section level jobs. Of course the
strongest emphasis is on the various jobs in the Emergency Service area such
as Official Emergency Station and Emergency Coordinator. There are other
things that also need to be done to support the various ARRL programs. Some
examples of Section level jobs are Technical Specialists, Public Information
Officers, Government Liaison and Official Observers. There are also needs
for some Division level jobs such as Volunteer Counsel and Volunteer
Consulting Engineer. There are also other jobs available through
Headquarters such as Volunteer Instructors and Volunteer Examiners. Browse
the various ARRL sites or contact your SM for more information.
Check Ron Hashiro's, AH6RH, websites for more information on several
subjects. Ron was featured on Newsline report 1740 on December 17. It can
be heard on the Newsline conference on Echolink.

HAPPENINGS:
This year's Honolulu Marathon was Sunday 12 December 2010. "Mahalo to all
who helped with the event". Greg - NH6ZS
There has been pulsing noise on 7088KHz which is known either as the Chinese
Woodpecker or Chinese Dragon. We think it is over the horizon radar and
started about the time of the North Korean incident. The result is many
nets are moving to 7188KHz. ARRL HQ is aware of the situation.
Kevin, AH6QO, continues to run the Tuesday night, PacSecARES net on HF,
usually on 3888 kHz this time of year, but also, 7188 and 1870. Digital
modes are practiced as well. New hams are encouraged to check into the New
Ham/EmComm Practice net on Thursday nights on the Statewide RACES Repeater
System (147.02/.04/.06 MHz) PL on 147.06 (Diamond Head) is 103.5 Hz. All
new hams and those wishing more EMCOMM experience are welcome to join.
