On Monday, February 9, the House Transportation Committee will hold
the first hearing on House Bill 143, "Relating to the Use of Mobile
Phones and Electronic Devices While Driving".

The text of the bill can be found at:

http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2009/Bills/HB143_.pdf .

HAMS and others are concerned that the inclusion of "Electronic
Devices" could prohibit operation of mobile radios while driving.

The more testimony from the more people, the better. A single page is
most likely to be read. Multi-page testimonies are rarely read in
their entirety.

Testimony can be submitted by email, per the following directions:

Persons wishing to offer comments should submit testimony
at least 24 hours prior to the hearing with a transmittal cover
indicating:

· Testifier's name with position/title and organization (if any);
· The Committee the comments are directed to; (House Committee on
Transportation)
· The date and time of the hearing; (Monday, February 9, 2009, 9:00
a.m.)
· Measure number; (HB143) and
· The number of copies the Committee is requesting.

Submit testimony in ONE of the following ways:

EMAIL: TRNtestimony at capitol.hawaii.gov (For comments less than 5
pages in length);

PAPER: 5 copies (including an original) to Room 403 in the State
Capitol;
or
FAX: For comments less than 5 pages in length, transmit to 586-8469
(Oahu) or
1-800-535-3859 (Neighbor Islands).

The hearing notice can be found at:

http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2009/hearingnotices/HEARING_TRN_02-09-09_.pdf

If you attend the hearing you have the choice as to whether you wish
to present your testimony in person, by reading it or by making brief
comments in support of your written testimony.

Please excuse multiple postings -- at this late date it is important
to get the word out to as many interested people as possible.
