Aloha Bruce,

Thought I would jump in with some quick info. I'm a Ham here in Hawaii and
get this reflector on email regularly. I will leave you in Ron's capable
hands ( Ron's a living Ham legend here ) with regards to the Ham radio
questions. (I have a echo-link L at my station and have never been able to
connect to KH6IB either for some reason - from here in my home in central
Oahu approximately 6 miles North of Pearl Harbor).

My suggestion really just has to do with Maui - after just coming back from
a few days there. If you get a chance to drive up to the volcano you may
want to head up there early. Sometimes the summit (It's a US National Park
so you can drive a paved road up to the 10,000 plus feet) is completely
cloud covered. While we can't guarantee the weather they tell me that early
in the morning (after sun up) is a good time to drive up there. I made the
mistake of getting up there at about 1030-1100 local and it was like being
in the inside of a milk jug. Couldn't see anything. However the drive up
there was mostly clear and well worth the trip scenically. Also, if you do
have time to go up there it was 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29C) at Sea Level and
42 degrees Fahrenheit (5C) up at the summit. All I had on was shorts and a
tee shirt ... brrrrrrrrr.

Look forward to having you here. Enjoy your trip.

Aloha
KH6DAN

Hi Ron and tnx for your www site.

I am writing to seek some assistance and input from you and/or others re
my forthcoming trip to your country. We depart Melbourne Australia on
Good Friday our time and return on the Saturday or Sunday week. We are
staying in Honolulu and Maui. The purpose of the trip, apart from some
sight seeing and AR is my step daughter's wedding on Maui.

I plan to bring my FT470A dual band h/h with me. I note that you appear
to have a complete list of repeaters on your www site.

I have been trying to access some of the Echolink open repeaters and
links but to no avail. I generally get a response to the affect that my
node cannot connect to the node of the R or L in Hawaii. I have tried
the two you mention (KH6IB and AH6JA) but only one of them is visible
to be and the other wont let me connect. There are others but they
wont let me connect. I was hoping to speak to some local amateurs over
there with a view to obtaining some local knowledge and advice, and to
perhaps arrange an eye ball if time permits.

In the first instance would you be willing to give me a few pointers?
I can supply you with further details about our accommodation, etc. I
would also appreciate your advice re the Echo linked R and L stations
pse. I would also be interested in having a HF or Echolink chat to you
and/or others as this would allow my wife Wendy to listen in and gather
some info as well. We have done extensive WWW based research into this
trip but take the view that nothing beats first hand local knowledge.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers and happy 2008
