Please excuse duplicate postings, want to be sure to reach everyone.
The HURT 100 is an Ultra Marathon (100 miles) held annually in Honolulu, on
the mountain forest trails between Manoa Valley, across upper Makiki Valley,
and Nuuanu. Only 100 runners are allowed to compete, and they come from all
over the country. Starting with the 2007 race, ham radio operators
successfully assisted with communications between the 3 aid stations
(Paradise Park, Makiki and Nuuanu). We have been asked to assist again this
year.
We need volunteer communicators to link the aid stations via radio and
internet during the race, January 19 and 20. We will start Saturday
afternoon and finish Sunday afternoon. This year we will have 4 shifts:
Approximately 7:00 a.m or 8:00 am -- 4:00 pm
4:00 pm - midnight
Midnight - 7:00 am
7:00 am - 3:00 pm
The hours will vary sightly depending on location. Manoa is already fully
staffed by a State Civil Defense/USAR crew.
Radios, computers and support materials are currently being assembled and
will be provided. Minimal proficiency with email will be required. Radio
will be used for back-up and coordination.
This is an excellent way to practice your emergency communications skills
and to assist the runners and race organizers at the same time.
Please contact Bart Aronoff - WH6AA - at wh6aa at arrl.net if you can help out,
indicating your preferred//available times and a location preference if you
have one. (Makiki is pretty civilized; Nuuanu is in the forest.
If you have questions or want to discuss by phone please email me with your
number and best time to call.
