Hi,
Im Michael, K3MXO, and I live Waianae. Ive been in
Hawaii now for a bit over five years but havent had
an opportunity to set up a rig up to now due to a few
moves, time in Tripler (Im a 100% disabled vet), and
other trivia.
As far as ham radio goes, I prefer the low end HF
bands (160-40m with occasional passes at 30m) CW using
lower powered surplus sets GRC-9, Chinese 102E, E.
German SEG-15, PRC-74 etc with improvised antennas,
some of which worked surprisingly well. I'm partial
to surplus boatanchors (though, granted, the SEG-15
and the PRC-74 are semiconductor rigs)and firmly
believe transistors and the like are merely a passing
fad.
While I used to operate from home on the mainland, Im
living in an apartment now which presents a challenge
or two vis-à-vis antennas so Im planning to take the
show on the road or off the road, as the case may be
by packing a rig or two on the back of my Jeep with
some antenna material (dipoles, whips, wires, masts
etc), some camouflage netting to keep the sun off and
the air moving, water and the ever important pupus.
At least one of the rigs will wind up with me in my
kayak which should be entertaining since its all of
8-1/2 long and I figure the antenna will be a whip
about twice that in height.
I do not now own nor have I ever owned a rig with a
microphone, though I may add either a PRC-25 or a
PRC-77 (or an RT-524?) to the mobile set. This will
add 10 and 6 FM to the range of possibilities, though
Im unaware of what the local activity is on these
bands.
Oh, my one claim to fame is that I wrote the booklet
A Users Guide to ARC Corp Receivers (NOT my title!)
sold by Fair Radio for the past nearly 30 years and
which is going into revision after long last.
One thing I would like to know is if there are any
places I can set up without any problems, especially
from folks wearing BDUs and carrying M-4s for a
living.
Other hobbies include radio control airplanes,
miniature engines, miniature machining (though, at the
moment, it seems to have evolved into rebuilding
watchmakers lathes), and photography.
Best regards,
Michael, K3MXO
