Francis Theodore Blatt, born August 27, 1910, died January 13, 2005, in
his sleep, at home. After graduating from McKinley High School, he became
Chief Radio Operator for Libby, McNeil & Libby where he installed the first
interisland wireless communication system. He worked at the U.S Navy Yard,
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 1934-1945 and received numerous awards for
ability, industry, work knowledge, and qualities of leadership, including
the Meritorious Civilian Service to the United States Navy Award. He then
became the Federal Aviation Agency Transmitter Station Chief for Hawaii
from 1946 till retiring in 1970.
His amateur radio career began at age ten years old. He built radio
receivers and transmitters before the time vacuum tubes were available, and
was actively advising and repairing radios and antennae until his death.
His first ham license was K6ETF in 1928. Francis may have been the longest
continuous member of the ARRL and QST subscriber from 1928 to the present.
After WWII, his call sign became KH6KH which remaind to the present. He
was active member Amateur Radio Relay League, Honolulu Amateur Radio Club,
and the Military Amateur Radio Service.
He is survived by step-son Kimonui Holgen of Oregon, two granddaughters,
and his many friends. In lieu of flowers, please make monetary
contributions to Honolulu Assembly of God Francis and Antonia Blatt
Memorial Fund. Many thanks to Drs. Sharon Lawler, William Loui, Paul
DeMare, and Gary Lattimer, and their staff, and St. Francis Medical Center
Liliha Sullivan-4 nurses for the excellent medical care provided.
Memorial Service will be Thursday, January 20, 2005 10:00am at Honolulu
Assembly of God, 1007 Koko Head Avenue. A lunch celebrating his life will
follow.
