Can you please elaborate? Where is Morse code still used professionally?

I see about one message per year or so, so I think the answer is: NO

As long as I have someone's attention, wonder if any list members are
interested in participating on the US team in the IARU HST (high speed
telegraphy) World Championship. It will take place in Germany in
October 2011. Details at http://www.hst2011.de/

It's a fun time and you will meet some folks who have incredible QRQ
abilities. I've participated in 2 past events (Macedonia in 2005 and
Bulgaria in 2009).

As now now, I have 3 definites and 2 probablies (including me). If
you're interested or have any questions, drop me an email.

Looks like my first attempt to send this to the list sent it directly to
Barry instead of the list, so I am repeating it here just in case anyone
else has any information on sources of some recordings that might be
available:
-------------------------------------------------------

Barry,

Sorry, not me. But I do have a question that I have posed to some of
the European EHSC guys in the past, with no replies. I would really
like to hear a recording of a typical EHSC qso at 60 wpm where they are
using keyers (as required). In my 50 years of CW, I have never heard
anyone send reasonable CW on a paddle above 45 to 50 wpm, and suspect I
have not really heard proper timing above 45 wpm. It would really be
interesting and a pleasure to actually hear properly timed CW from a
paddle at 50 wpm or higher.

I don't recall what the top sending speeds are in the HST, and am not
sure if they reach speeds near 50 or not? Do they make recordings that
would be available?

I qso daily around 60 wpm, for something like an hour, but only with a
kbd of course. I cannot write (or otherwise generate hardcopy) reliably
at any speed, and am not able to copy random characters (e.g. call
signs) accurately at any speed either. On the paddle I can sometimes
manage reasonable sending error rates in the 35 to 40 wpm range during a
QSO. Under competitive pressure, that probably would drop to 20 wpm,
which is unbearably slow of course!

So, any information on possible sources of audio recordings of decent
keyer sent QRQ would be of interest.

You don't really want to hear it :-)
Most members of the EHSC are (or were at a time) able to produce
readable CW at 60wpm (PARIS) with paddles, but it's not really a
pleasure to listen to it. Effectively (due to spacing) most of
these QSOs are probably closer to 50wpm than 60wpm...

The current HST world records:
http://www.darc.de/uploads/media/HST-World-records-13.10.2010.pdf

Transmitting letters: EU7KI 283 cpm (that's REAL characters, due to
the random nature of letters in code groups that's about 330cpm /
66wpm PARIS). Figures are even more impressive: EW8NW 254 cpm (real
again, that's over 80wpm in PARIS!).

But the Belarussian competitors cannot be compared with "normal" hams,
or even the other serious competitors at the HST (from Russia,
Romania) because they do it professionally, and they _only_ practice
to send code groups. Plain text or QSOs are absolutely not within
their skill sets.

Most "normal" hams at the HST competitions are _much_ slower. I can
send plain text at about 45wpm and on a good day 50wpm (PARIS), but at
the HST I am happy if I can do about 35wpm.
