Brian.....
I have the 3K Classic MKll with 3CX1200A7 which is the later model.
I did some snooping around some time back about the hum thing on the 8877
model and it seems as if Henry did not use a bifilar wound fil choke on the
earlier models. Apparently they changed to the bifilar wound during
production. I would check this first just to make sure you don't have the
hum problem.
As far as the tuned input......remove the PA box from the shroud and remove
the bottom cover.
If you have a grid dipper couple it to the input coil and see if you can get
a dip anywhere near where you need to be. This may not be an accurate way of
doing it because the input relay will not be operated.
I would like to check mine too but I haven't figured out a way to tune them
while installed in the cabinet.
The Henry production guys likely had a test cabinet with holes drilled into
the side to get access to the slugs.
Some of my coil assemblys had fallen out of position....they are only glued
in place. I re-glued them with model airplane glue....Ambroid.
Henry was not good about updating their manuals.
The manual I have for the Classic does not match the equipment completely
and some of what it DOES have is incorrect. Same with the 3K-A.
It pays to be knowledgeable with amps if you own a Henry....but...there is
nothing else like them. I wouldn't have anything else!
I bought a 3K-A new and picked it up at the factory in West LA back in 78'
and I still have it.
You need good antenna insulators with either of these amps.
Both these amps have the largest and most heavy duty power supplies of any
of the '3's.....they are just killer.
In my opinion.....the xK Classic series of amps....3K Classic X, 3K Classic
MK ll, 5K Classic....are all of poor design in certain areas (RF).
There are other more serious design flaws that exist and you won't know you
have them....until you do!
The 3K-A is a much better unit.
