Hi Bob

Three possibilities come to mind:

1. You have an intermittent IC or two - a scope should assist in its 
location.

2. The sockets have lost their contact tension over the years. Have you 
tried widening the spacing of the IC leads so that they preess better 
against the socket contacts?

Turned pin IC sockets are much more reliable but that would involve some 
work.

3. You can still get 74LS ICs - Farnell/Element14 have a considerable 
portfolio of those parts so doubtless other suppliers stock them.
