[Heathkit] TT-1A Questions

I am working on my fourth TT-1A and all have what a friend calls Pixie Dust
inside.  It's a white product that blows easily away and dissolves easily
with a cleaning liquid.  Ay ideas what it is?

 

I also am looking for some top hinges.  Yes I know I can buy better hinges
but I like to keep things original.

 

Thoughts/suggestions/etc?
