[Heathkit] I think I just got a pretty nice gift?

A friend stopped by and deposited two Heath radios on my doorstep - an
SB-310 and an SB-313, complete with manuals and both loaded with all three
filters. Heck, I already have a couple of the matching speakers.
His comment was that he had "had it with the (expletives deleted) dials and
tuning". He purchased both radios on ebay with the sellers claiming that
they were near mint and fully functional. In reality, kind of. Both play
quite well. The problem is that the dials slip and don't move the tuner at
all in some places. He claims to have gone back to the manuals and stepped
through the construction/adjustment steps several times. No progress.
Are these radios really hopeless as he claims? I remember reading here on
the reflector some pointers to assist in repairing this problem, several
years or more ago. I can search the archives and hopefully find them. But
is there a website that might be as or more helpful? Can they be made fully
functional again?
If I can make them work, he gave me quite a present. If not I suppose high
blood pressure follows close behind. He seems well into the blood pressure
situation.
I have looked at these radios since the late 1960s and had always wanted to
try one or the other. Now I have both. Can I make them work? I would
assume so as there appear to be many of the SB series out there. It appears
that the dial assembly is the same on all of them.
Any suggestions or recommendations.
Thanks,
Gerry
