Indeed, plain text is preferred for the best cross-platform compatibility and minimum payload size. IMO HTML/RTF just promote silly stuff. I know my email client doesn't handle them well because it is old and outdated. I like it that way. It also doesn't get infected by malware nor will its address list get stolen. Having written that, if I really want to see what is in one of those messages I know how to get there. If I don't think it is of interest to me I just skip it.
