You probably need to re-lubricate the moving parts on your HW-101 VFO. The  
VFO is relatively easy to get out without removing the front panel. I also  
cleaned and tightened the coax connector on the VFO.
 
I have just had to replace the FET in my HW-101 VFO as it had completely  
failed and I used a J310 which works with no problems.
